The Fanaroff - Riley Transition and the Optical Luminosity of the Host
نویسنده
چکیده
We show that a model for radio source dynamics we had earlier proposed can readily reproduce the relationship between the radio power division separating the two Fanaroff-Riley classes of extragalactic radio sources and the optical luminosity of the host galaxy, as found by Owen and Ledlow (1994). In our scenario, when less powerful jets eventually slow down to the point that the advance of the working surface (i.e., hotspot) becomes subsonic with respect to the external gas, the jet’s collimation is severely weakened. This criterion distinguishes the powerful and well collimated FR II sources from the weaker sources producing the less collimated FR I type morphologies.

The Influence of Black Hole Mass and Accretion Rate on the FRI/FRII Radio Galaxy Dichotomy
We use medium resolution optical spectra of 3CR radio galaxies to estimate their black hole masses and accretion rates. Black hole masses are found from central stellar velocity dispersions, and accretion rates are derived from narrow emission-line luminosities. The sample covers both Fanaroff-Riley (FR) classes; the more powerful FRIIs and the less powerful FRIs. We find that FRIs and FRIIs se...
متن کاملOn the Origin of the Fanaroff – Riley Dichotomy
A small fraction of double radio sources show a peculiar and striking hybrid morphology; they have a distinctly FR I structure on one side of the nucleus, and a FR II structure on the other. We argue that the mere existence of these HYMORS is quite incompatible with the theoretical explanations for the Fanaroff–Riley dichotomy that are based upon the nature of the jet plasma, or those invoking ...
متن کاملLuminosity function, sizes and FR dichotomy of radio-loud AGN
The radio luminosity function (RLF) of radio galaxies and radio-loud quasars is often modelled as a broken power-law. The break luminosity is close to the dividing line between the two Fanaroff-Riley (FR) morphological classes for the large-scale radio structure of these objects. We use an analytical model for the luminosity and size evolution of FRII-type objects together with a simple prescri...
متن کاملThe Optically-powerful Quasar E1821+643 Is Associated with a 300-kpc Scale Fr I Radio Structure
We present a deep image of the optically-powerful quasar E 1821+643 at 18 cm made with the Very Large Array (VLA). This image reveals radio emission, over 280h kpc in extent, elongated way beyond the quasar’s host galaxy. Its radio structure has decreasing surface brightness with increasing distance from the bright core, characteristic of FR I sources (Fanaroff & Riley 1974). Its radio luminosi...
متن کاملOptical Nuclei of Radio - loud AGN and the Fanaroff - Riley Divide
We investigate the nature of the point-like optical " cores " that have been found in the centres of the host galaxies of a majority of radio galaxies by the Hubble Space Telescope. We examine the evidence that these optical cores are relativistically beamed, and look for differences in the behaviour of the cores found in radio galaxies of the two Fanaroff-Riley types. We also attempt to relate...
